Classic Amazon Foothills and Massif

Classic Amazon Foothills and Massif

per person

The Colombian ridge is the greatest hydrological zone in the country where the most important water reserves in the equatorial area of the planet can be found forming the mouth for the main rivers in the country. In this magical place, the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers runs from south to north between the Andean branches leading to the Caribbean Sea, and the Patía River (which runs towards the Pacific Ocean) and the Putumayo and Caquetá rivers flows towards the Amazon basin. This area of complex and unique topography, geography, and geology provide a wide range of ecosystems that allows bird speciation throughout the territory.

The landscapes of the Southern Colombian Andes are dominated by High-Mountain ecosystems including the amazing Chiles, Cumbal, and Azufral volcanoes, La Cocha lagoon, and the high Sibundoy valley. To the east of the Sibundoy valley, the Andes descend abruptly towards the Amazon following “El Trampolin” route, a path full of dizzying biodiversity that zigzags in the high Andean forest to find the ecosystems of the Amazonian foot lands where´s in effect the entrance to the Amazon Rainforest. Towards the west of the valley, the route descends meandering among High-Andean and Andean Forests, and the Humid Tropical Jungle of the Andes western chain, making its way to the Pacific coast.

The almost intact forests, the combination of landscapes, and the confluence of ecosystems here, lead to incredible biodiversity, especially of birds. During our visit, you will have the opportunity to bird watch in different ecosystems. We will cross virgin forests with rugged topography, explore the Amazonian foothills and the Andean-Amazonian transition while we contemplate the beautiful landscapes of the Andean valleys in the Colombian Massif (Above 3000 m.a.s.l). Besides, you will observe birds in the southwestern corner of the country overlooking the Pacific Ocean plus the unique bird-community of the Tropical rainforests in the Biogeographical Chocó area.

This is a fairly standard birding tour with early morning starts and evening finishes to each day. One some days we may take picnic lunches in order to no waste time during the middle of the day or having to leave site. The weather can be unpredictable with rain and sunshine both likely. At higher altitudes it can be chilly. We have an amazing photo opportunity for many species of hummingbirds and other species coming to feeders, we will also be looking for a good number of species that are very rare and seldom seen, but we will be going to areas that hold these sought-after species.
