Day 1. Arrival to Bogota International Airport

Day 2. Sumapaz National Park (North-Eastern Andes) / (2800 – 3800 m / 9190 – 12470 Ft - 10-17 °C / 50 – 62.6 °F)

 

We will visit early in the morning one of the most beautiful natural parks in Colombia, Sumapaz National Park is close to Usme locality in Bogota. A park of 154.000 hectares that provide water to many municipalities around and an incredible diversity of life. The main target in this park is to enjoy the highland wetlands of eastern Andes, a paradise of life in where is possible to take amazing pictures of multicolour lakes, amazing aquatic birds as Bogota rail, Noble Snipe, Andean Teal Ruddy Duck ad others and a fantastic biodiversity of plants Puyas and Spelletias. In Sumapaz the low elevation are present all day, but also the opportunities to take fantastic pictures of birds and beautiful landscapes. In the afternoon we will transfer to Villavicencio city in eastern plains, in where we will rest in a nice hotel of the city.

Day 3. Enchanted Garden, flight to Medellin, transfer Jardin (Central Andes)

In the morning we will visit the amazing Enchanted Garden, a especial location with hummingbird feeders in where is possible to see a great more of 15 species of this fantastic birds; in the afternoon we will take a flight to Medellin in where a car will be wait for us to travel to Jardin (Antioquia) enjoying the amazing landscape of Cauca valley; we’ll have lunch in a typical “paisa” restaurant. We will rest in a nice hotel in the central park of the little village; you can walk of the streets with balconies full of flowers and the mountains around. Some birds this day include Indigo-capped Hummingbird, Ruby Topaz,

Day 4. Yellow-ear Parrot Reserve (Central Andes)

(2300 – 3000 m / 7550 - 9850 Ft – 10 - 17 °C / 50 – 62.6 °F)      

We’ll watch birds, orchids and amazing landscapes all day in the Yellow-eared Parrot Reserve, the best place in Colombia to see this very important species of parrot; we’ll walk from Alto de Ventanas locations on the road from Jardin to Rio Sucio village enjoying the nature, landscapes and weather; we’ll have breakfast and lunch in the field, and early in the morning we’ll search for some owls on the road; we’ll come back to Jardin in the afternoon to rest and enjoy a great coffee in some of the coffee stores in the village!

 

Some birds possible in Jardin are, Yellow-eared Parrot, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, Spillmann’s Tapaculo, Blackish Tapaculo, Ocellated Tapaculo, Rufous-crowned Tody-Flycatcher, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Barred Fruiteater, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Rufous Antpitta, Chestnut-naped Antpitta, Black-collared Jay, Streak-throated Bush-Tanager, Lachrymose Mountain-Tanager, Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant, Sharp´s Wren, White-browed Spinetail and many more.

Day 5. Cock of the Rock Lek, transfer to Manizales (Cauca Valley)

(400 – 1400 m / 1310 - 4590 Ft – 15 - 25 °C / 59 - 77 °F)      

Early in the morning we’ll visit the amazing lek of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (one of the best in the neo-tropics), where the birds come 2-3 meters close to us.  Sometimes it’s possible to see 20-25 males calling. After breakfast in Jardin we will transfer to Bolombolo, near the Cauca River, a nice dry forest that has some very interesting and important birds. In the afternoon we will transfer to Manizales city in where we will rest in a nice hotel.

 

Some important birds in Jardin and Bolombolo include: Antioquia Wren, Apical Flycatcher, Greyish Piculet, Black-chested Jay, Andean Cock of the Rock, Speckle-breasted Wren, Black-striped Sparrow, Cocoa Woodcreeper, Spectacled Parrotlet, Rufous-naped Greenlet, Moustached Puffbird, Golden-crowned Warbler, Greenish Elaenia, Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch and many more.

Day 6. Rio Blanco Natural Reserve (Central Andes)

(1300 m / 4265 Ft – 15 - 20 °C / 59 - 68 °F)      

All day walking and looking plants, orchids, birds and other animals in in Rio Blanco Natural Reserve, one of the most famous places in Colombia to see birds by the Antpitta (Torotoi) feeders (some of the most difficult birds to see in the tropics); in this location the mixed flocks and the amazing number of birds are fantastic and very easy to see, also if we have good luck the number of orchids with flower always is a beautiful show. We will search at night for some owls and nightjar species including the very rare Lyre –tailed Nightjar!

 

Some interesting birds to see in Rio Blanco include: Brown-banded Antpitta, Bicoloured Antpitta, Agile Tit-Tyrant, Rusty-faced Parrot Chestnut-crowned Antpitta Slate-crowned Antpitta, Undulated Antpitta, Chestnut-naped Antpitta Dusky Piha, Yellow-vented Woodpecker, Bar-bellied Woodpecker, Powerful Woodpecker, Masked Saltator, Ocellated Tapaculo, Ash-coloured Tapaculo, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Barred Fruiteater, Black-collared Jay, Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager, Golden-plumed Parakeet, Red-hooded Tanager, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, White-throated Hawk, Black-capped Hemispingus, Yellow-billed Cacique, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, White-throated Screech-Owl, Rufous-banded Owl, Wedge-billed Hummingbird, Bronzy Inca and many more.

Day 7. Nevado del Ruiz National Park, transfer Otun (Central Andes)

(3300 – 4100 m / 10830 - 13450 Ft – -10 - 10 °C / 14 - 50 °F)      

All day we will enjoy the amazing landscapes around Ruiz Volcano enjoying the amazing hummingbird feeders of termales hotel and the paramos and grassland of this beautiful place. Nevado del Ruiz National Park have a fantastic biodiversity of plants and birds specifically, in a wonderful day will be possible to see Andean Condor, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle or Buffy Helmetcrest, two charismatic species that will show you the splendor of this place. The hummingbird feeders are consider some of the best in Colombia, with species of hummingbird as Greater Sabrewing (the second biggest hummingbird in the world), Rainbow-bearded Thronbill, Shining Sunbeam, Purple-backed Thronbill and many more. At the final of the day we will transfer to Manizales city in where we will rest. You will enjoy incredible trekking’s in Paramo and Cloud Forest! In the final of afternoon we will transfer to Otun-Quimbaya National Park to rest inside the cloud forest lodge!

Day 8. Otun-Quimbaya National Park - (Central Andes)

(1600 – 1800 m / 5250 - 5900 Ft - 15-18 °C / 59 - 64.4 °F)      

We will look for wonderful things all day in the Otun-Quimbaya Sanctuary of Fauna and Flora; this is a lovely place in the central Andes with some very important and rare birds; we will visit some location inside the park with waterfalls and Otun River; at night we will take some night explorations searching some mammals and enjoying the sound of the nature life at night.

Some interesting birds in Otun for this day are Cauca Guan, Chestnut Wood-Quail, Multicolored Tanager; Stile´s Tapaculo, Hooded Antpitta, Moustached Antpitta, Colombian Screech-Owl, Rufous-breasted Flycatcher, Flame-rumped Tanager, Scrub Tanager, Golden-plumed Parakeet Red-ruffed Fruitcrow Chestnut-breasted Wren Wattled Guan, Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant, Andean Solitaire, Oleagineous Hemispingus, Golden-headed Quetzal, White-winged Becard, Western Emerald, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Emerald Toucanet, Spotted Barbtail, Speckle faced Parrot and many more.

Day 9. Otun-Quimbaya transfer to Montezuma Reserve (Central Andes)

We will search more animals and plants in the morning in Otun-Quimbaya National Park, in the afternoon we will departure to Pueblo Rico municipality and the Cerro Montezuma Natural Reserve.

Day 10 - 11. Montezuma Rainforest Reserve (Western Andes)

(1300 – 2600 m / 4265 - 8530 Ft – 12 -25 °C / 53.6 - 77 °F)      

Montezuma is one of the best places to see birds, orchids and biodiversity of the Choco Biogeographic Region in Colombia, with an elevation gradient on the track from 1100 to 2800 meters, making this places one of the most diverse areas in all Colombia with more than 600 species recorded of birds, 700 species of orchids and one amazing biodiversity (+500 species) of butterflies.  We can see many endemics and near-endemics of the Choco Region; we will explore in two complete days 4 different spots on the birding track: Los Chorros (highest spot), Cajones (medium spot) and Clarita and Rio Claro (lower spots).  The diversity in this four spots is special. Youcan take a shower in Tamata River and enjoy the hummingbird feeders around the house. Montezuma have another special component, you will enjoy the life of Tapasco Family the owner of the places and the delicious gastronomy typical of a Colombian farm.

Some very important birds in Montezuma for this two days include: Black-and-gold Tanager, Gold-ringed Tanager, Munchique Wood-Wren, Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer, Parker´s Antbird, Alto-Pisones Tapaculo, Crested Ant-Tanager, Violet tailed Sylph, Brown Inca, Velvet-purple Coronet, Empress Brilliant, Purple-throated Woodstart, Toucan Barbet, Fulvous-dotted Treerunner, Uniform Treehunter, Bar-crested Antshirke, Bicolored Antvireo, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Choco Tapaculo, Nariño Tapaculo, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Club-winged Manakin, Choco Vireo, Beautiful Jay, Sooty headed Wren, Black Solitaire, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager, Purplish mantlet Tanager, Glistering Green Tanager, Rufous-throated Tanager, Scarlet and White Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer, Dusky Bush-Tanager, Tanager Finch, Yellow-green Brush-Finch, Ochre-breasted Tanager, Yellow-collated Chlorophonia.

Day 12. Montezuma, transfer to Salento (Western Andes)

We will see bird in the lowlands of Montezuma in the morning; we will transfer to Salento Village in the afternoon (Wax Palm Capital – our national Tree).

Day 13. Salento Wax Palm Canyon and horse riding / transfer Ibague

We will have a really nice trekking day and horse ring in the amazing and emblematic Wax Palm Canyon of Salento (Quindio), a beautiful and typical coffee village in where the nature and tradition is the main attraction. We will visit wonderful paths inside the cloud forest and amazing landscapes of Andes; we will have the chance to see some birds, butterflies and amazing plants including the Queen of Quindio. In the afternoon we will transfer to Ibague city (the music capital of Colombia) to rest!

 

Day 14. Nevado del Tolima Park, San Jorge Bot. Garden (Central Andes)

(2000 – 2300 m / 6560 - 9190 Ft - 10-17 °C / 50 – 62.6 °F)

We will visit El Nevado del Tolima National Park, El Rancho Hot-Springs, El Silencio and Juntas locations the whole day, a wonderful cloud forest and landscapes in the Combeima Canon; we will visit also the hummingbird feeders in Ukuku Lodge in where we will see some very special species. In the afternoon we will look for birds in San Jorge Botanical Garden close to Ibague city to enjoy amazing diversity of plants and beautiful landscapes including the snow peak of Tolima Volcano.

 

Some of the next birds are possible there: Spillmann’s Tapaculo, Ocellated Tapaculo, Black-collared Jay, Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager, Masked Saltator, Golden-plumed Parakeet, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Red-hooded Tanager, Dusky Piha, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Andean Siskin, White-capped Tanager and many more.

Day 15. Orchids of Tolima Foundation, transfer Bogota (Central Andes)

Orchids of Tolima Foundation is a natural reserve dedicated to reproduce and conserve native species of Orchids of Colombia and the central Andes; with a collection of more of 7500 plants of 170 different species, this places is perfect to understand the dynamic of Andean ecosystems and the conservation. The place have some really nice path and “mirador” in where is possible to see the entire city in the middle of the mountains and the collections of plants around it. In the afternoon we will transfer to Bogota to finish with a nice dinner this wonderful trip.
