One of the best and popular routes in Colombia in the low lands of Magdalena Valey (the longest river of the country), You will visit amzinng places with a lot of birds in where the ovenbirds, antbirds, woodpeckers are the main atraction.

Day 1. Arrival to Bogota International Airport

Day 2. Florida Park, Enchanted Garden & Tabacal Lake (Eastern Andes - western slope)

(1300 - 2600 m / 4265 - 8530 Ft - 12-25 °C / 53.6 - 77 °F)

We will visit this day during the day three very special places close to Bogota, La Florida Park of the wetland ecosystems in where is possible to see very  important birds of the savanna of the highlands as Bogota Rail, Apolinar Marsh Wren, Silvery throated Spinetail, Noble Snipe, Subtropical Doradito and more. After La Florida, we will visit the “Jardin Encantado ”hummingbird house in San Francisco, we will can see as to 16 different species of hummingbirds as Indigo capped Hummingbird, Gorgeted Woodstart and White bellied Woodstar; after of this place we will visit Laguna El Tabacal Location, a nice place af a secondary forest with very interesting birds as to Rusty brested Antpitta, Rosy thrust Tanager, Grey throated Warbler, Stripe breasted Spinetail and more. In the final of the day, we will come back to Bogota to rest.

Day 3. Mana Dulce Reserve (Magdalena Valley)

Early in the morning we will transfer to Mana Dulce Natural Reserve in where the birds of the humid tropical forest and dry forest are the main attraction, we can see this day birds as Apical Flycatcher, Velvet fronted Euphonia, Lance tailed Manakin, White bellied Antbird, Pheasant Cuckoo, White ear Conebill and others . In the afternoon we will transfer to Ibague city, in where we will stay in a nice and comfortable hotel.

Day 4. Nevado del Tolima National Park, San Jorge Botanical Garden (Central Andes)

Birding in El Nevado del Tolima, El Silencio and Juntas locations the whole day, for seeing the next important birds: Golden crowned Redstart, Spillmann’s Tapaculo, Ocellated Tapaculo, Black-collared Jay, Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager, Masked Saltator (endemic), Golden-plumed Parakeet, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Tolima Dove, Yellow-headed Brush Finch, Tolima Blossomcrown, and many more. In the afternoon we will visit also San Jorge Botanical Garden. In the night we will come back to the hotel in Ibague.

Day 5. Doima Road, Picaleña Lake´s & Laguna del Hato (Magdalena Valley)

We will search some birds in the dry forest of Doima Road, in the afternoon we will visit the dry forest and fields of Laguna del Hato in where we will can find many birds. Some interesting birds of this day are Blue ground Dove, Lance tailed Manakin, Velvet-fronted Euphonia, Apical Flycatcher, Pearl Kite, Ruddy Ground-Dove, Common Ground-Dove, Yellow-crowned Parrot, Dwarf Cuckoo, White-collared Swift, Short-tailed Swift, Barred Puffbird, Western Slaty-Antshrike, White-fringed Antwren, Jet Antbird, Vermilion Flycatcher, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Panama Flycatcher, Scrub Greenlet, Pale-breasted thrush, Buff-breasted Wren, Rufous-capped Warbler, Buff-rumped Warbler, White-eared Conebill, Plain-colored Tanager, Grassland Sparrow, Slate coloured, Ruddy-breasted, Gray, and Yellow-bellied Seedeater, Blue-black Grassquit, and much more. In the afternoon we will transfer to Mariquita Village in where we will stay in a nice holiday hotel.

Day 6. Bellavista Reserve, transfer to Rio Claro Natural Reserve (Magdalena Valley)

We will visit the Bellavista natural Reserve in Victoria municipality, a small but really nice reserve of the Caldas department; in the afternoon we will transfer to Rio Claro Natural Reserve. Some birds of interest this day include White-mantled Barbet, Beautiful Woodpecker, Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant, Sooty Ant-Tanager, Tody Motmot, Cocoa and Streak-headed Woodcreeper, Red-billed Scythebill, Streaked Flycatcher, Ochre-bellied Flycatcher, Striped Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Golden-hooded Tanager, Black faced Dacnis, Streaked and Buff-throated Saltator, Yellow-bellied Seedeater, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Great and Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Cocoi Heron, Bare-faced Ibis, Wood Stork, Jabiru, Roadside Hawk, Pearl Kite, Yellow-headed Caracara, American Kestrel, Large-billed Tern, and Black, Yellow-chinned Spinetail, White-headed Marsh-Tyrant, Pied Water-Tyrant, and White-winged Swallow.

Day 7-8. Rio Claro Natural Reserve (Magdalena Valley)

We will search birds all day Rio Claro Natural Reserve. You can enjoy the incredible humid tropical forest and amazing biodiversity in this reserve.

Day 9. Rio Claro Reserve, transfer to Paujil Reserve (Magdalena Valley)

We will search more birds in Rio Claro Reserve all the morning, after lunch we will transfer to San Vicente de Chucuri; on the road we will do some stops to search some important birds of Magdalena Savannahs. 

Some important birding during this day include: Northern Screamer, Black-capped Donacobius, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Large-billed Seed-Finch, Red-breasted Blackbird, Rufescens Tiger-Heron, White-throated Crake, Long-winged Harrier, Laughing Falcon and many more.

Day 10. Cerulean Warbler Reserve & Yariguies National Park (Eastern Andes)

(1200 – 1600 m / 3940 - 5250 Ft - 15-18 °C / 59 - 64.4 °F)      

We will up walking (1 hour) early in the morning in 4x4 cars to Yariguies National Natural Park and the forest of Cerulean Warbler Reserve, we will stay all day in the forests searching many interesting birds. We will walk on a slippery path “Lengerke Path” built as 130 years ago. In the afternoon we will come back to San Vicente de Chucuri to rest.

Some nice birds this day include: Gorgeted Wood Quail, Black Inca, Parker’s Antbird, Magdalena Tapaculo, Colombia Mountain Grackle, Double-banded Greytail, Long-tailed Tapaculo, Andean Emerald, Highland Tinamou, Mustached Puffbird, Red-headed Barbet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Spotted Barbtail, White-bellied Antpitta, Ochre-breasted Antpitta, Yellow-throated Spadebill, White-throated Spadebill, Green and black Fruiteater, Pavonine Cuckoo, Golden-wing Manakin, Rufous-naped Brush Finch, Uniform Antshirke, Chestnut-crowned Gnateater and more.

Day 11. Coffee Fields San Vicente de Chucuri, transfer Ocaña (Eastern Andes)

We will go to go to search more birds in the coffee fields of san Vicente de Chucuri and the road to “La Germania” spot; we will look birds also on the canopy trees and grasslands. In the afternoon we will transfer to Ocaña city in where we will rest in a nice hotel close to the main park of the city.

 

Some important birds this day are: Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird, Niceforo´s Wren, Turquoise Dacnis, Red-billed Emerald, Bar-crested Antshirke, Yellow-browed Shirke-Vireo, Russet-crowned Cake, Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Slaty Spinetail, Cinereous Becard, Bicoloured Wren, Band-back Wren, Sooty-headed Tyrannulet, Striped Cuckoo, Lemon-rumped Tanager, Large-billed Seed-Finch, Lineated Woodpecker, Rufous-naped Greenlet and many north migrant as Morning, Yellow, Cerulean, Blue-winged, Black and White, Blackburninan and Bay-breasted Warbler and many more.

Day 12. Bushbird Reserve (Eastern Andes)

(1200 – 1600 m / 3940 - 5250 Ft - 12-17 °C / 53.6 - 62.6 °F)      

We will search birds all day in the bamboo forest and secondary forest of Bushbird Reserve; we will walk during all the morning per different paths and road around the reserve, in the afternoon after of  break we will come back to the reserve to search more birds in some path of dry forest. In the night we will come back to Ocaña to rest.

 

Some very nice birds include: Recurved-billed Bushbird, Grey-throated Warbler, Streak Spinetail, Lined Quail-Dove, Klage´s Antbird, Chestnut-bellied Thrust, Orange-billed Nightingale-thrust, White-bibbed Manakin, Band tailed Guan, Chestnut-capped Brush Finch, Black-headed Tanager, Burnished-buff Tanager, Speckled Tanager, Yellow-legged Thrush, Moustached Puffbird, Yellow-bellied Siskin, Cliff Flycatcher and others.

Day 13. El Cauca Location, transfer to Bucaramanga (Magdalena Valley – Eastern Slope)

(700 – 1200 m / 4265 - 8530 Ft – 12 -25 °C / 53.6 - 77 °F)      

We will transfer early in the morning to El Cauca location with the target to see the enigmatic Todd´s Parakeet and others very interesting birds of this dry area. In the afternoon we will transfer to Bucaramanga city in Santander department in where we will take a flight to Bogota to finish the tour.  

 

Some birds that are possible there are Painted (Todd’s) Parakeet, Golden-wing Sparrow, Lance-tailed Manakin, Ruby Topaz Hummingbird, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Black-faced Dacnis, Rosy-thrush Tanager, Black-faced Tanager, Rufous and white Wren, Rufous-naped Greenlet, Red-billed Scythebill, Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant, White-whiskered Spinetail and more.
